How to Get an Accident Report in Los Angeles

When you’ve been involved in an auto accident, you likely have a plenty of things to worry about, even if you walked away with minor injuries. When you have to take your case to court to get the compensation you deserve, that’s just more on your plate to deal with.

When you find yourself wondering how to get an accident report in Los Angeles, you could use help from Haffner Law. Getting your accident report doesn’t have to be a complicated process, but when you have only two years to get your car accident claim filed, you need all the help you can get.

Getting Your Los Angeles Auto Accident Report

Luckily, the state of California keeps the process of obtaining the records you need simple. If you’re a victim, passenger, or otherwise involved in the accident, you will generally have online access to information about your crash.

Depending on your location, both the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will offer reports. Accident reports can help confirm facts and statements about your crash.

For your own crash report, you’ll need to go to the LAPD’s website or the CHP’s website and find their crash report portals. This will mainly depend on which department was on the scene. If you’re not certain, contact your nearest police department for help finding the right page.

If you choose to receive your form online, you’ll be asked to fill out the required information to ensure that you were involved in the crash. Otherwise, you’ll need to print the report request and send it in, along with a small fee, to receive your report.

Limitations to Receiving your Report

Of course, in some cases, you may not be able to receive your report right away. Certain restrictions do apply to these documents, and it may be more difficult than expected to obtain them.

For example, you may still need to wait the minimum forty-five days before your report will be available. And sometimes, your case may be too old to be found online. Reports filed before a certain date may be excluded from the online process.

Likewise, reports involving juveniles, arrests, and deaths will not be available for release. If you’re unsure of how to get the information you need for your case, you may need legal help.
